The Heron has landed: Ubuntu 8.04 officially released
Apr 24, 9:44pm    (3 reviews)  linux, windows, ubuntu, virtual-drive  http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/200...
From the page: "One particularly significant feature included in this release is Wubi, a Windows-based installer that allows Ubuntu and Windows to coexist on the same partition. Wubi installs a fully functional Ubuntu environment into a folder on the Windows filesystem and sets up a boot menu that allows the user to enter Ubuntu at startup. Wubi doesn't require the user to partition their hard drive and it makes it possible to uninstall Ubuntu directly through the Add/Remove Programs utility in Windows."

Swecha LiveCD - Swecha
May 22, 2007 9:02pm    (1 review)  linux, ubuntu, free-software, telugu, telugu-software  http://swecha.org/wiki/Swecha_LiveCD
From the page: "Swecha LiveCD is a Telugu localised operating system that runs entirely from a CDROM. It does not require any installation on the hard disk. Common tasks such as writing and printing documents, browsing the web, sending/receiving emails, chatting, editing graphics etc. can all be in Telugu from the LiveCD. Optionally, you can install the operating system onto the hard disk. It contains a Telugu text-to-speech system integrated with the desktop. Since, one can 'hear' the text on the desktop by pointing at it, illiterate people may use it to access the desktop, read news on the web etc."

From the page: "Swecha is a project that aims to localise GNU/Linux and other Free Software to Telugu. The project will strive to bridge the language barrier that is one of major reasons behind the digital divide. We have a working system in which most common tasks like writing and printing documents, browsing the web, sending/receiving emails, chatting, editing graphics etc. can all be in Telugu. The screenshot on the right shows you the Swecha desktop, a GNOME desktop localised to Telugu. Most of this work will ultimately reach all the GNU/Linux distributions. It is also packed into an easy to use LiveCD distribution. The project has also developed a Telugu text-to-speech system and integrated it with the desktop. Since, one can hear the text on the desktop or web page by pointing at it, illiterate people may use it to access the desktop, read news on the web etc. It contains a Telugu text-to-speech system integrated with the desktop. From the page: "Get APT anywhere Have you ever felt that there is no life without APT? Well, if you'd suddenly lost conection to the internet, how would you install new packages? What about dependencies? You've just finished installing Ubuntu and configured it to a rad look, with all your favorite applications? For some reason you now have to re-install it? Feel like you have to download all of your favorite programs again? What? You've already forgotten which packages you had dowloaded before? What is APTonCD? APTonCD is a tool with a graphical interface which allows you to create one or more CDs or DVDs (you choose the type of media) with all of the packages you've downloaded via APT-GET or APTITUDE, creating a removable repository that you can use on other computers. APTonCD will also allow you to automatically create media with all of your .deb packages located in one especific repository, so that you can install them into your computers without the need for an internet conection."

17 Must-Have Free Apps for New Ubuntu Users | Free Geekery
May 10, 2007 8:08pm    (23 reviews)  linux, freeware, ubuntu  http://www.rewardprograms.org/thefreegee...
From the page: "If you haven't tried Ubuntu, the new Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn offers the PC user a chance to try out this open source software with little fear. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes from ZDNet states that "Ubuntu 7.04 is by far the best and easiest version of Linux that I've used" and "a simple (and safe) way for PC owners to experiment with Linux." In addition, Ubuntu lightens the user experience with a desktop edition for those who don't want to alter their computers with a server install. With that said, Kingsly-Hughes admits that some "dark corners" still exist for Ubuntu users that only a true geek and open source advocate would understand. "
